Above the rooftops of Illertissen – A new park at Vöhlin Castle?

The former Baroque and herb garden to the south of Vöhlin Castle has been lying fallow for several years. Now, as part of a project, 33 students from Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences have developed ten concepts for how this historically significant site could be revitalised and made accessible to the public.

The designs were created in collaboration with Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences, the castle’s managing director Werner Martin, and caretaker Alexander Mayer, who had tended the grounds as a private garden for decades. Mayor Jürgen Eisen welcomed the ideas and announced that he would present the plans to the town council – as a possible step towards a new castle park.

The exhibition ‘Above the Roofs of Illertissen’, featuring the students’ sketches, models and visualisations, is currently on display at the university castle. It showcases a diverse range of concepts – from walkways leading into the hotel garden to the conversion of the sheepfold – and whets the appetite for a future green space at the castle.
